I have tried whatever I knew of. I tried it on long drives, short drives, AC on, AC off, no incline road, phone charger removed, hot weather, cold weather etc. Auto idle just did not engage at all. But if you run the Prius in engine braking mode (B), the ICE continues to run even when the car is not moving. This may be a quirk of the Gen 3. Not sure about other versions. So if you really miss hearing the ICE idling while at a stop light, that’s a work-around. But (B) mode isn’t recommended except when descending a mountain road. .
